Faceted Classification 

Faceted classification is the most mature form of classification theory, and it has influenced methods of creating other KOS.  In this class, Vanda Broughton gave    a brief overview of the development of facet analysis and shows where it has been employed outside the library, particularly in digital contexts. The class covered  the following topics:

  • Origins of faceted classification
  • ‘Facets’ before Ranganathan
  • Ranganathan’s fundamental categories
  • Models of faceted structures
  • More categories; the CRG and beyond
  • Facets in information architecture, facets in web design, and facets as visualisation tools
  • Facet analysis as a fundamental theory for KOS
  • Structures and relationships in faceted KOS

The class was delivered via Zoom and was attended by 91 participants from 23 countries. Presentation slides are available to all participants via the KO-ED forum on the ISKO UK website.
