KO-ED Introduction to Knowledge Organization - Definition and scope by Sylvie Davies

In this class, the first of the series Introduction to Knowledge OrganizationSylvie Davies set up the context and introduced basic knowledge organization concepts and terminology. The class covered:

  •    Definitions and scope of Knowledge Organization (KO)
  •   Brief contextualisation of KO and overview of potential applications
  •   Difference between knowledge/information/data
  •   Different approaches to organising knowledge
  •   KO for information retrieval (IR)
  •   Requirements and constraints of IR
  •   Brief overview of users’ behaviour (searching/browsing)
  •   Brief overview of conceptual structures

The class was delivered via Zoom and was attended by 69 participants from 17 countries across Europe, Asia, North and South America. Presentation slides (with voice-over) were made available to all participants via the KO-ED forum on the ISKO UK website.
