Analysing creative image search queries to determine important facets

Creative professionals within the advertising, marketing, design and journalistic industries search for images to visually represent or support the project’s intent. They use conventional and social search engines, as well as more specialized commercial stock photo libraries. These systems are organized differently, but most of them operate based on image provider’s metadata with the use of content-based filtering to some extent. The presentation will report on an analysis of documents known as briefs, which are widely used in creative industries as a requirement document to describe a need. We reveal that there are three main classes of facets, which include business, contextual and image related information. Each of these classes can serve as a scope of the development of an improved image search system for creative professionals. The findings of the analysis are used to inform system design from the perspective of user information needs, for the PhotoBrief project.
