Guidelines
For speakers | For authors | For poster presenters | Printable version (pdf)
General
These guidelines are for presenters of slides, papers and/or posters. They apply to electronic publication on the ISKO(UK) website as well as to the printed and published proceedings.
As a tribute to the late Brian Vickery, the proceedings of this conference will be published in a hardbound volume by Emerald Books. It will contain key papers authored by him, as well as a bibliography of his publications and, subject to peer review, as many as possible of the papers and abstracts of posters presented during the conference. Provided the submission deadlines are met, electronic versions of all the presentations, papers, and abstracts will also be published on the ISKO(UK) website.
All submissions (except for posters in physical format) and queries should be sent to conference2011@iskouk.org. Please use the name of the first author in the file name of each submission (e.g. “GilchristPaper.doc” or “GilchristSlides.ppt”)

Guidelines for authors
Timelines and deadlines
| 6th May 2011 | Please submit your full paper (together with Manuscript Release Form and Permissions Checklist) for publication on the conference website and in the printed proceedings, subject to peer review. |
Publication options
Speakers can choose whether or not to submit a full write-up of their presentations. All submitted papers will be uploaded on the conference website, after the conference. A selection of these papers will also be published in the printed proceedings, subject to peer review. For both purposes, the same guidelines apply and the deadline for submission is 6th May 2011.
If you choose not to write up your presentation, please instead submit an informative abstract (up to 250 words) for the website, by 6th May.
Copyright permissions
Please note that, for publication in the Proceedings, the publishers require you to complete a Manuscript Release Form transferring copyright to the publisher, and also a Permissions Checklist showing that you have obtained any required rights to use material from other publications. The forms will also, through the publisher, confer on ISKO(UK) the right to publish papers on the conference website.
Papers for publication
Please read the publisher’s full Guidelines, which can be found here. Below is a synopsis:
- In order to ensure that as many as possible of the papers and abstracts can be included in the Proceedings we ask that “Full presentation” papers should not exceed 6,000 words in length, and “Brief presentation” papers 3,000 words. The editor reserves the right to reduce the length of longer submissions in consultation with the authors.
- The title should be concise and expressive of the content; a sub-title may be added if required.
- The paper should have an abstract, not exceeding 250 words.
- The paper should preferably be submitted as a Word document.
- Tables should be typed and included as part of the text.
- Succinct and clear captions should be provided for all tables, figures and plates.
- References to other publications should be in APA style, as described in the full Guidelines.
Abstracts
Poster presenters, and authors who do not wish to provide a full paper, may instead submit an informative abstract of no more than 250 words. The submission deadline is 6th May 2011. The abstract will be uploaded on the conference website, and it should include:
- The title of the paper
- An indication of the context and purpose of the work
- A description of the methodology
- A summary of results, including products or other outcomes
- Implications and significance of the work.
Guidelines for poster presenters
Timelines and deadlines

| 4th July 2011 | Arrive with poster between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. |
General
- Posters should have a clear descriptive title and an abstract. The title will be included in the programme and the abstract will be published on the conference website.
- The text of the abstract need not appear on the actual poster itself.
- Poster presenters must bring all of their material to the conference in physical format; the organizers cannot print or convert electronic submissions to posters, or otherwise create copy.
Presentation
- Posters will be displayed on boards measuring 120cm high x 180cm wide. Material may be put on the boards using Velcro spots or double-sided tape only; these will be provided at the conference.
- Posters should be no larger than A1 in size (594 x 841 mm or 23.4 x 33.1 inches)
- Posters should be a single large sheet, preferably A1, well designed, and information rich. Simple downloads of PowerPoint presentations or web pages or sets of individual A4 sheets are discouraged.
- You should ensure that the poster may be understood by delegates without the need for additional explanation. However, you can choose to provide supplementary handouts.
- Posters should be clearly labelled with the poster title and author / contact details. These may be institutional contact details rather than personal addresses.
- Clear typefaces should be used, and the recommended minimum is 24pt.
- Use of colour, bold and larger typefaces is encouraged, as is the use of illustrative material, photographs, charts, etc.
Arrangements for display
- Posters will be displayed in the main atrium alongside vendor exhibition tables for the entire 2 day conference.
- The display boards will be available for use from 8.30 a.m. on the first day of the conference. Ideally, posters should be on display by 10 a.m.
- Poster presenters should clear their boards by 18.30 on the final day.
- Presenters should attend their posters during the poster presentation times as indicated in the programme – ideally at both coffee breaks on both days.
Publication
- Please submit an abstract of your poster content by 6th May 2011, for inclusion in the website version of the conference proceedings.
- Optionally, you may also provide a write-up of your poster for publication on the website. This will also be considered for inclusion in the printed proceedings, subject to peer review. If you want this to happen, your write-up should be submitted by 6th May and should follow the guidelines for authors of full papers, subject to a maximum of 2,000 words. All submitted papers will be published on the website and this may mean that you cannot in future submit the same paper to a journal as “unpublished”.
Arriving on the day
Please aim to arrive, with your poster, between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. on Monday 4 July. Maps and directions are available here.
On arrival, please report to the registration desk, situated in the foyer, where one of the conference team will show you the display board and give you the Velcro dots to affix your poster to it.
