Call for papers
The second biennial conference of the UK Chapter of ISKO (International Society for Knowledge Organization) honours the life and achievements of Brian C Vickery, one of the great pioneers in our field. Vickery was an astute analyst and prolific writer. This conference will pick up on some of the diverse strands in his intellectual legacy – of which faceted classification was only one.
Just as Vickery had the knack of drawing out practical applications from the lessons of academic research, so this conference will bring together practitioners, theoreticians, consultants, researchers, teachers and students, all with an interest in the organization of knowledge and information. There will be a mix of short (20-minute) and longer (40-minute) presentations, as well as a display of posters. Speakers will be encouraged to provide a paper to accompany their presentations. The papers submitted will be peer-reviewed and, subject to negotiations currently under way, a commemorative proceedings volume will be published.
Conference themes and topics
The huge variety of Vickery's contributions to the field could inspire an endless list of topics. Even before his official retirement in 1983, many of his research papers were written in anticipation of developments to come and a steady stream of stimulating papers continued on his website right up until 2008. Proposals addressing an original topic are therefore very welcome, but the following themes may provide some inspiration:
- Classification, information retrieval
- Semantics and the Web
- Putting the user first
- Evaluation and testing
- Society, networking and collaboration
- Models and structure
Submissions
The call for papers is now closed. If you submitted an abstract, you will be informed by 1st February 2011 whether your proposal has been accepted. For publication in the proceedings, your full paper will need to be submitted in advance; the date will be confirmed shortly. Editorial guidelines will be available from February 2011, on the conference website. Powerpoint presentations should be submitted by 20th June 2011. They will be loaded on the conference website, but will not be included in the printed proceedings.
